You’re not just getting an introduction into Adobe Audition but because this book is written by professionals ‘in the business’ of sound production it turns out to be a satisfying experience just to read from the professional’s standpoint.
What this book does is cut to the important work of applying Adobe Audition to the real world tasks in sound production. I’ve felt like I’ve got the ‘best in the business’ looking over my shoulder and guiding me along the way. For that reason alone this CIAB gets five stars. Aside from that, I would give it another five stars simply because it is a true to form for the outstanding presentation and teaching format that has made the Classroom In A Book Series the tops for anyone who wants to learn Adobe software products.
Highly Recommended. Fantastic as are all the “classroom in a book” series books. I think I own one for just about all my Adobe programs. Since Adobe doesn’t include any instructions with their software, I buy these books at the same time I buy the software. You can’t go wrong getting them. If you have never used the software before, or even if you have, I guarantee you will learn something.
Check out the used book sales and save a bunch! Useless book. Given that this book had good reviews, I purchased it immediately. Since then, I have tried to find out what this book is good for. But I have failed to find it useful for anything. Perhaps it’s me and my way of thinking, but I’ve given this book every chance I could figure out to give it. Let me say: I was not new to audio editing.
I was familiar with Audacity and fairly expert on the now-discontinued 2-track editor, Bias Peak. I guess the basic problem with this book for me is this: This book takes a tutorial approach. Sounds good, right? Each interface element or effect is accompanied by steps to take, to use it with a sample file from the book’s included CD.
BUT there is no real conceptual overview, nothing saying that, “the basic logic of Audition is this Net result for me: no understanding and no useful skills. I tried in vain to learn simple things, such as how to move the playhead around or how to quickly back up or go forward by a window-width. The index isn’t that helpful, either, in that it fails to list many important things.
For example, the only entry in the index for “playhead” is page 38, where it is explained that what I call the playhead is now called the CTI or “current time indicator.
As it happens, there are several other references to actually DOING things with the CTI usually referred to, by the way, as the “playhead,” but none of them are findable from the index. Maybe I’m just better suited to watching someone interact with the program than to reading written instructions. Just today, I needed to learn about CD mastering. I thought, “Well, maybe this is what this book is good for – a brief overview of what mastering is and how to do it.
There IS a chapter called “Mastering,” but the overview is just fluff: e. Then the tutorial segments are “do this, then do this,” but they don’t really give me any idea how to do anything else except the few, fairly specific tasks described. I found it unable to help me know enough specifics to actually USE any particular feature.
I also found it unable to give me any overview of how Audition is set up or of why I would want to do most of the tasks the book describes. Instead of purchasing this book, I suggest downloading the free User Guide from Adobe, then both 1 purchasing a video series there are several choices that seem good, including several courses on Udemy and 2 browsing Adobe TV and Youtube for videos on specific features not covered in a basic series.
I don’t like to give bad reviews of things, but this particular book has not been helpful to me at all. I regret the price and the time I wasted trying to learn from it. Its a great book it arrived in excellent condition, very helpful without making me feel stupid, it covers everything the program does. I’m a big fan of the Classroom in a Book Series, and this volume is one of the better ones.
Very straightforward tutorials to guide the user through simple to intermediate tasks using Audition. I keep it handy for reference, since I don’t do much audio. I was able to figure out Adobe Audition without taking tons of classes or hiring outside tutoring. It’s a good investment.

The package is proving to be just what I needed and my knowledge has been enhanced via the addition of Classroom In A Book. The layout and information are first class whilst the tutorials are well thought out and easy to use and understand. This is an excellent adjunct to have available for users of all levels and requirements. One person found this helpful. The book took a long time to arrive, and even failed to make the last delivery date and I had to contact the supplier.
However, it did eventually arrive and all was sorted out satisfactorily. The book is great and very informative and useful.
